Construction Begins at NASENI-TROMENT Biotechnology Factory, Idu Industrial Area, Abuja.

NASENI-TROMENT Biotechnologies has officially broken ground on its rapid diagnostic test manufacturing facility at Plot 6, Cadastral Zone, adjacent to NASENI Headquarters in Idu Industrial Area, Abuja. Construction commenced on October 2, 2024.

The facility, built on land provided by NASENI, will house seven specialist production and operational zones when complete — including an RDT Production Area, a dedicated QA/QC and Regulatory laboratory, a Molecular Biology Area, an Extraction Area, a Plastic Cassette Molding unit, a Training Centre, and climate-controlled Warehouses.

What Makes This Facility Different

Unlike other medical device facilities in Africa that assemble or package products under foreign license, the NASENI-TROMENT facility is designed for complete vertical integration. Plastic cassette housings will be injection-molded on-site. Test strip membranes will be cut, coated with reagents, and assembled within the facility. Nothing of consequence is imported.

“This is the distinction that matters,” said Eng. Michel Ashkar, Technical Director. “We are not buying finished components and putting them in a box with a Nigerian label. We are manufacturing the diagnostics — every layer, every reagent, every cassette — from the ground up.”

Timeline and Employment

The facility is expected to be 80% complete by early 2025, with the installation of production equipment and final regulatory commissioning to follow. Phase one operations will produce over 100,000 tests per day, scaling toward a full capacity of 600 million per year.

The project is projected to create over 200 direct jobs — scientists, engineers, laboratory technicians, quality control personnel, and operations staff — with thousands more indirect jobs in supply chain and logistics.
